Let's get eating

Sod the running. I realised I far prefer talking about food. So here I am.

I am going to switch lanes and start talking about food.

To be precise, I am going to start writing about the food that I've liked, and some of the (small) successes I've had in the kitchen.

To kick things off, La Figa in Limehouse.

This wonderful, unpretentious Italian restaurant is one thing I will really miss about London when I leave. It's not glamorous, it's not intimate. It's loud, gregarious, and it works.

The Ah Lau and I come here almost once a week. Our expanding waistlines can attest to that.

Tonight, I had my favourite carbo-load: Porcini ravioli.

Porcini ravioli is one of my favourite things in life: It's got starch, it's got cream, it's got fungi. What's not to like?

One thing I do is add a healthy dash of pepper. It just takes the dish to a whole different dimension, in my view.

On the DLR on the way to our weekly Figa pilgrimage, the Ah Lau asked me: "How come you always order some sort of pasta dish?"

Well, silly cow, it's all about the Holy Trinity of course - MTC. Meat and two carbs.

He gets to choose the meat, I choose the pasta, and for a nice starter, we have.... pizza (second carb!)

For tonight, we decide on restraint, so he chooses the saltimbocca, a lovely dish comprising veal lined or topped with prosciutto and sage.

The meat was tantalisingly tender, the sage was simply seductive and the proscuitto... Well, it was perfection.

Portions at La Figa was huge, so huge that I ended up bringing home half of my ravioli, and to add we brought home, er, a pizza. For breakfast.

That should tide us over until our next visit!

La Figa is at 45 Narrow Street, E14 8DN. Tel: 020 7790 0077

Half marathon

So I've announced my decision to attempt a half marathon.

I am going to just start a regular week of running to regain my momentum before even attempting a proper training plan.

So far:

Sunday: 41 mins with 10 set of short hills in GP.
Tuesday: 49 mins in CE, BH, and GP.

Wish me luck!

London BUPA 10K race

Ran the BUPA 10k today.

The route was within the city, and goes past some key London tourist spots. Good atmosphere, well organised if a bit overzealous on some fronts (like refusing to let us jump the barrier of the pen to make a quick and desperately needed last-minute pee break...)

Our own timing indicated about 62 minutes, but I am still waiting for the official results to come in.

Shaved off a few seconds from the Finsbury Park run, but didn't realise my goal of breaking the 60-minute mark today.

Best part, Ray came to support me so that was just fantastic. It's really so uplifting to have someone there cheering you on (even if he's not right at the finishing line but after...)

I did, however, make a toilet stop and I did have cramps at the 4-km mark, so I will keep my chin up, keeping plodding, do more hills and pray for the best!

Signed up for another 10k end June to keep up the motivation. A hilly one - I don't expect to realise my 10K dream just yet but I thought a different terrain might be a nice change.

Wish me luck!

Monday 11 May

Ran a short one, only 4.7km. Rubbish.

Still painful

8.5 km 0ver 65 minutes, took THREE breaks URGH!

But I did 7 rounds of hill training in Greenwich Park... The short one, but at the end of the run.

I wonder if I am gonna be able to complete the 10K next week?!!!!!!!!1

25 April and 26 April

Saturday 25 April was my birthday - we went to La Figa and way way way overdo it.

Had pizza, porcini ravioli, half a pizza AND a bottle of wine!

Felt so sick after that - but shiok! Forced myself to do my run. Did 6.8km on 50 minutes.

Sunday 26 April - Knew I should have listened to my body about not running on consecutive days. Only managed about 5km I think on 35 minutes (we were on the heath so cannot calculate accurately) on the heath with Ray. Nearly died ;(

He is simply too fast for me - I know he means well and we've tried so many times, but I think our running styles are too different. Or should I say speed...

Today, I am aching all over, and very lethargic. It's raining and I am ignoring the pile of laundry behind me...

Urgh

Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Had a horrible run today. I managed to clock 7.76km in 58mins, but it was PAINFUL - like "I want my mummy" painful. Both the distance and time has fallen back.

I had stitches 10 minutes into the run, ran out of steam at 30mins, and then had a super long break ;(

Okay, so I have a few - possibly legitimate - excuses:

1) I woke up at 3:25am (couldn't sleep) so I am physically tired.
2) It's the time of the month so I feel like crap.
3) I ran twice this week so my legs are wobbly.

Ok, we all have bad days... I must tell myself, we all have bad days.

Just wished it wasn't this soon into the restart programme!

A little farther

Ran yesterday, went a little farther into the Cator Estate, and did a bit more of Greenwich Park.

10 minutes but I did have one more stop/break.

Baby steps, lah. Baby steps...

According to the GMAP pedometer, I did 8.6km...

Running woes

Tuesday: Ran to the Cator Estate in Blackheath, back into the village, through the Heath, into the Park and back home.

Stopped twice to catch my breath. Think it was about 35 minutes. According the GMAP pedometer, this was about 6km.

Today: Same route, stopped a bit later in the run. Still as painful. Just as short.

Am I gonna be ready? I don't even dare to think about improving time. At this rate, I'd be happy to finish the 10k.

GULP!
